Job opportunities

Australia’s construction industry provides a variety of career pathways, but where can students find real job opportunities after they have identified a career path that interests them?

Skilled Trades

To start a career in skilled trade professions, students will need to commence an apprenticeship or traineeship. This will allow them to learn their skills as they work and earn money. The Australian Apprenticeship Centre recommends three steps to kick start an apprenticeship.

1. Preparation and Research

Students will need to prepare their resume, JobGuide provides a fantastic resource for how to build a resume.

When speaking to students, encourage them to consider questions such as:

  • What qualifications and job roles are available?
  • What industry best suits them?
  • What will commencing an apprenticeship in the construction industry involve?

2. Job Hunting

Those interested in starting an apprenticeship will need to search and find companies looking to hire an apprentice. Advise your students to start looking for jobs through different avenues available to them, such as:

  • Job Service Australia providers
  • Online job sites
  • Job ads in newspapers
  • Contact local employers directly – phone the company to see if they have any available positions, drop off a resume at their office and a follow up with a phone call to show your interest in the position.

3. The Apprenticeship

Once an apprenticeship has been commenced, the student and their new employer will need to contact The Australian Apprenticeships Centre to confirm details and organise the proper paper work to be signed.

Additionally, many construction companies hire apprentices directly. Visit their websites for information.
